Relatively high levels of serum adiponectin in obese women, a potential indicator of anti-inflammatory dysfunction: Relation to sex hormone-binding globulin

چکیده
UNLABELLED It is unclear whether serum adiponectin concentrations diminish linearly with increasing adiposity and, if not, which factors codetermine this association. These issues were investigated cross-sectionally in 1188 men and women, representative of middle-aged and elderly Turkish adults. Serum total adiponectin was assayed by ELISA. Serum adiponectin values in men, though declining significantly in transition from the bottom to the mid tertile of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), were similar in the two respective upper tertiles. In women, serum adiponectin concentrations were not significantly different in any tertile of these indices, were significantly correlated with BMI or WC within the low tertiles and not within the two higher tertiles. In a linear regression analysis for WC (or BMI) in a subset of the sample in which serum sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) was available and which additionally comprised adiponectin, fasting insulin and other confounders, only insulin and, in women SHBG, were significantly associated, but not adiponectin. In linear regression analyses for covariates of adiponectin in two models comprising 12 variables, insulin and SHBG concentrations were significantly associated in both genders though not BMI. Whereas in men HDL-cholesterol and CRP were covariates of adiponectin (both p<0.01), SHBG and apolipoprotein B positively associated in women (p<0.001), independent of BMI and fasting insulin levels. CONCLUSIONS Relationship between excess adiposity and adiponectin levels is inconsistent in Turkish adults. Independently from obesity and hyperinsulinemia, serum adiponectin discloses significant relationship with inflammatory markers and HDL only in men, not in women in whom it is influenced by SHBG, with consequent attenuation of its anti-inflammatory activities.

Relationship between Serum Levels of Anti-Mullerian Hormone, Adiponectin and Oxidative Stress Markers in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) is a valid indicator of ovarian function and is used for PCOS diagnosis. Some studies have shown that adipokines affect the synthesis of AMH, and therefore they are somehow related in function. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationshi...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Serum Level of Testosterone and Sex Hormone- Binding Globulin in Men with Type 2 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between serum level of testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin in men with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, forty men aged 40-70 with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomly selected and compared with 40 non-diabetic men. The two groups were matched for their age and BMI. After complete observation and examination...

Background: Leptin, a 16-KDa peptide hormone secreted from theadipose tissue, plays an important role in the regulation of energyintake and expenditure and body weight regulation; furthermore,it has a regulatory function on the reproductive system. The aimof this study was to assess the relationship between serum leptinlevels and sex hormones in psoriatic patients and control groupand to determ...
متن کاملFirst assessment of menstrual cycle function and reproductive endocrine status in Samoan women.
BACKGROUND American Samoa and Samoa are now characterized by one of the world's highest levels of adult overweight and obesity. Our objective was to investigate patterns of menstrual cyclicity reported by Samoan women and examine the relationship to adiposity and select hormone levels. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was performed among Samoan women, aged 18-39 years (n = 322), using anthr...
متن کاملSerum adipokine levels in the obese people
We read the article by Onat et al (1) on the association of serum adiponectin with obesity, hyperinsulinemia, lipoproteins, inflammatory markers and sex hormone binding globulin. In a relatively large population sample, they report some interesting results based mostly on statistical associations that, to our understanding, might not wholly represent the studied population itself. As we know, o...
